Executioner Angels The Battle of Gettysburg brought the dueling North and South together to the modest community of Gettysburg and on the edge of parting the Union. Gettysburg was as close as the United States got to Armageddon and The Killer Angels gives the entire everyday record of the fight that formed America's future. Michael Shaara recounts to the narrative of the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of the commanders and men associated with the activity of the fight. The chronicled record of the Battle of Gettysburg allows the peruser to encounter the fight actually and not the history book way educated in schools. A chronicled novel gives the realities direct and gives no critique by the individuals associated with history. The recorded record of the Battle of Gettysburg, as found in Killer Angels, gives the realities of the fight as observed through the eyes of Generals Robert E. Lee, Joshua Chamberlain, James Longstreet, also, John Buford. The sentiments and inward considerations of each General and the states of the fight are seen, heard, and felt by the peruser in the verifiable record. Shaara takes authentic permit with letters, the expressions of the men, and archives composed during the three horrible days of the fight. Shaara stays away from chronicled feeling and gives his own supposition towards the Civil War and the individuals. The verifiable record of the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg explicitly, in Killer Angels passes on the demeanor to toward war, demeanor towards the Civil War, and cause for battling the war of General Robert E. Lee, Joshua Chamberlain, James Longstreet, and John Buford. General Robert E. Shaara, through his editorial on General Lee, clarifies that Lee would not like to battle the war yet needed to. Lee felt it was his obligation to battle for his individual comrades, however not for a reason, land, or subjugation. So it was no reason and no nation he battled for, no perfect and no equity. He battled for his kin, for the youngsters, and the kinfolk, and not even the land, since the land merited the war, yet the individuals were, General Lee says (Shaara 263). General Lee battles for himself and must choose the option to battle, knowing in the end that he may not be right with his motivation and follow through on the cost sometime in the future. General Lee isn't an advocate of war, however he will serve his nation with respect and obligation on the off chance that vital. A man of goals and respect speak to the character of Union Colonel Joshua Chamberlain. Reading Pathways John Steinbeck

Reading Pathways John Steinbeck Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath being as commonplace as they are in the respective book-bags of high school freshmen and seniors, a post listing the three “pathways” into the labyrinth of greater Steinbeck-dom might not seem like the most obvious one. The first thing to know about Steinbeck is that he was incredibly prolific, with sixteen novels to his credit, many of them quite long and delicately structured. The other thing I like to say (or to claim more accurately) is that unlike most authors of upwards of ten novels, nearly all of Steinbeck’s sixteen are brilliant, though only a few are widely read. Cannery Row I will only list one that is a common favorite, because it is so dear to me. I discovered Steinbeck not in a classroom but on a family trip through the Salinas Valley, the famed Central California setting that takes on a near mythic quality in most of his work. I was not more than fifteen at the time and I have what is for me a very rare lucid memory of my mother reading through Cannery Row as the farmlands whirled by my window and my father drove further North.   I was just beginning to embark upon my love affair with literature at this age, and I remember being struck by the simple music of Steinbeck’s language as I am struck by it now as I open the book again to its most famous passage: “Cannery Row is the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flophouses.” The discovery of Steinbeck coincided for me with that discovery that language could accomplish so much more and describe so much more, than I knew. I suggest that the reader, no matter her age, begin where I began with Cannery Row. Here, Steinbeck concerns himself most singularly with the theme of giving an account of place, of a town, of town’s gathering and scattering within itself, and of its music. We find ourselves in Lee Chong’s Grocery, on an expedition with marine biologist known as “Doc” collecting various sea creatures along the coast (a character based on Steinbeck’s friend the marine biologist Ed Ricketts, to whom the book is dedicated), and in the “The Palace Flophouse Bar and Grill.” The structure of the book functions much like the introduction and development of the musical themes of an opera, interchanging between vignettes of its perennial people and places and essayistic interludes that attempt to capture the music of the town as a whole. It is in this sense a fitting introduction, or re-introduction, to the music of Steinbeck’s literary world, whose themes are often much darker. To a God Unknown (Suggested reading before East of Eden)   Only his second novel, this slim book took the young Steinbeck five years to write (longer than he spent on either East of Eden or The Grapes of Wrath). In it, all the essential themes that have their mature expression in East of Eden begin to percolate and take form. The farmer’s deep, almost familial relationship to the land he tills is explored, with its ups and downs, its great harvests, its too many rains and too few rains. The nature of brotherhood, and the gulfs opened in the differences between brothers, comes to dominate the novel’s landscape. The protagonist, Joseph, bears a name that is never coincidental when attached to stories of brotherhood. The first brother a preacher and the second an alcoholic who is murdered early in the story, represent, in a sense, the two opposite ways for a son of farmers to cease to be a farmer. Joseph, however, has the deep soul of a farmer, and some of the novel’s drama takes place surrounding his brother’s theological uneasiness wi th Joseph’s continued conversations with a tree. These archetypal explorations of the relationship between people and the lands and towns they inhabit in Steinbeck’s Salinas Valley has for me always hinged on an insight not only into how life can be turned into symbolism, but also on less baroque and more profound insights that symbolism is effective because it resembles life. In Dubious Battle (Suggested Reading before The Grapes of Wrath) This second early novel of Steinbeck’s begins to develop the political and social themes that come to dominate his masterpiece The Grapes of Wrath, though In Dubious Battle is a masterpiece in its own right. Its title taken from Milton’s Paradise Lost. This novel  explores the loss of a different sort of paradise, the loss of modern utopias, a loss made all the more violent for its genuine clash against the indecencies, the unbridled exploitation of mass hunger, that California’s large scale commercial farmers called the “labor market” of the 1930s dustbowl migration. The book manages a rare feat, rare today and even rarer in the balkanized ideological climate of the early thirties. In Dubious Battle eviscerates both the brutality of the system that lead to the immiseration of farmers and comes to discover the boorish opportunism of “The Party.” The ACP is never named directly, existing as “The Party” in a royal sense throughout the book in a way that prophetically anticipates both Orwell and the horrors of “really existing communism” for a novel written many decades before the publication of Gulag Archipelago and from the perspective of the left.   With many gut-wrenching descriptions of the insanity of starvation amidst fields of plenty that presage the most horrifying passages of Grapes of Wrath, In Dubious Battle  also allows us access to the moral sensitivity of Steinbeck. It is a chronicle of the politicization, rise, fall of a single Communist organizer, who becomes a martyr the moment it suits the cynical purpose of his organization. It is a deep meditation on both the necessity and the tragedy of mass political activity that accomplishes the rare feat of being moral without being moralistic. Finally, it is a work with much to teach us in this era of renewed political anger and demonstrations of all ideological hues. Although In some cases I agree with the Wall Street Journal s article Your Internet Friends Are Real, I feel Kyle Chayka, the author, does not completely know what he is talking about.. In the article Internet friends are real too, Kyle Chayka stated multipley claims that I, as an individual whom has grown up with the internet, feel are not very well thought-out and are unaware of situations which make his claims untrue in a full sense. In Internet friends are real too, Chayka states â€Å"You don’t tend to find deep relationships online.† However, growing up I have had plenty of friends get into truly intimate relationships through online connections. Although the relationships were not face to face, does that mean they are not serious? A relationship is as serious as the individuals within it. The matter of communication has small effect upon the matter. The History Of Medieval Asia Minor ( Finkel ) - 920 Words

Ertuğrul, the father of Osman I, arrived in Asia Minor from Merv, located in modern day Turkmenistan, lead 400 horsemen to aid the Seljuks of Rum against the Byzantines. After the dissolution of the Turkish Seljuk Sultanate of Rum in the 14th century, Asia Minor was divided into a patchwork of independent, mostly Turkish states, the so-called Ghazi emirates. Leader of one of these emirates was Osman I. In 1299, under Osman, his emirate extended the frontiers of Turkish settlement toward the edge of the Byzantine Empire. How the early Ottomans came to dominate their neighbors unknown because there is little known about the history of Medieval Asia Minor (Finkel). The following century after Osman’s death in 1326, Ottoman rule began extending over the Eastern Mediterranean and into the Balkans. In 1326, just after Osman died, his son, Orhan succeeded him, captured the northwestern Anatolian city of Bursa and named it the new capital of the Ottoman state. The conquests of Orhan ended Byzantine control over northwestern Anatolia. The sultans that followed expanded into Europe via the Hellespont and into the Balkans. The Venetians lost the city of Thessaloniki to the Ottomans in 1387 and Serbian power in the region ended after the Ottoman victory at Kosovo in 1389. With the Balkans under their rule, the strategic conquest of Constantinople became a central objective for the Ottomans. The Turks succeeded in controlling nearly all prior Byzantine lands surrounding the city.

In writing the stories he uses the narrator to tell about what happened and the acts that were involved when he did what he did. He told his stories from the mind of a madman, per se. He tells both stories from the mind of a mentally ill person or from a diseased mind as in â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart†. The disease had sharpened my senses, not destroyed, not dulled them. (The Tell Tale Hears, 692)He talks about his disease, referring to his alcoholism being a mental disease. He proves many times throughout the story that he is a mad man. He talks about killing the old man because his eye reminded him of a bird, just the craziness of the human psyche. Poe has a way of showing and defining the human psyche in a demonic fashion. And yet at the same time act like he is not mad and that is what any normal person would do if they are bothered by something or someone. And he shows realism in doing these acts because of how he shows the human emotion in â€Å"The Tell Tale Heart†: â€Å"Yet for some minutes longer, I refrained and kept still. But the beating grew louder, louder! I thought the hear must burst. (The Tell Tale Heart, 693) When he was describing the guilt he had after killing the man. He thought it was his heart beating when in fact; it was his own heart pounding and pounding. These events support the idea that he is mad and confirms the fact that we do not know the reliability of the story at all. Edgar Allan Poe chose to tell his stories the way he did so that he would give the impression that he was not trustworthy. This works towards his efforts and would not be the same if told in present tense. Knowing this helps with the message of the story the author is trying to get across as in â€Å"The Black Cat†, â€Å"For the most wild, yet most homely narrative, which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. (The Black Cat, 695) Here at the beginning of the story he leaves you wondering about the credibility of the details and curious if you can trust his story. Edgar Allan Poe wants us to experience the mystery and the climax and surprise that he presents in telling the story. He will start the story with what seems to be a hint of honesty. In â€Å"The Black Cat†, he tells you about his childhood, â€Å"From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions. (695) Then he immediately tells you of his alcoholism in â€Å"The Tell Tale Heart†. Poe does not suggest that any of this would label him as a mad man. He is all to proud of himself on how he was able to come up with the plot in â€Å"The Tell Tale Heart† when he stated, â€Å"You should have see how wisely I proceeded with what caution, with what foresight, wit what dissimulation I went to work! † Poe uses the narration to build up the suspense of the stories and how his human nature was pushed to the limits with the old man’s eye and with the black cat and the return of the black cat. He builds up the suspense and then leaves you a bit feeling sorry for him and trying to understand why he did what he did. Then he goes on to act like he has no feeling whatsoever about the killings. The he is almost justified, I mean, wouldn’t you be if you were him? And then human again as he narrates the apparent guilt he felt over the acts as being the key that ultimately got him caught.
